Generic name: Amantadine

Commercial name: PK Merz, Paritrel 

  • A drug that stimulates the release of dopamine.
  • It is usually given in the early stages of the disease or in combination with an anticholinergic drug or levodopa.
  • The treatment can be given intravenously in a hospital or day hospital over several consecutive days.

Advantages

May reduce levodopa-related dyskinesias.

Disadvantages

After several months, the effect of Amantadine wears off in half or a third of the patients who use it. Its effect can return after taking a short break from the drug.

Side Effects

 Mottled skin, edema of the legs, dry mouth, confusion, blurred vision and depression.
