What is the disease?

MSA is a rare, progressive, multisystem neurological disease that belongs to the "Parkinson's Plus" group of diseases. It is similar in some of its symptoms to Parkinson's disease, but differs from it in the mechanism of the disease, the rate of progression, and the involvement of additional systems in the body.

In MSA, various areas of the brain responsible for movement, balance, autonomic function, speech, swallowing, and coordination are damaged.

Common symptoms:

  • Slowness and stiffness in movement
  • Balance disorders and falls
  • Drop in blood pressure when standing
  • Urinary disorders
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Difficulty speaking and swallowing
  • constipation
  • Weakness and difficulty walking

How is MSA different from Parkinson's?

The disease usually progresses more rapidly, with involvement of several nervous systems simultaneously and a more partial response to conventional Parkinson's medications.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a neurological examination, assessment of symptoms, and ancillary tests and imaging. In the early stages, it may be difficult to differentiate MSA from other similar diseases.

Treatment of the disease

Currently, there is no treatment that cures the disease, but symptoms can be alleviated and quality of life improved through multidisciplinary treatment that includes medications, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and additional supportive care.

the prevalence of the disease

MSA is a relatively rare disease, with an estimated incidence of approximately 4–5 patients per 100,000 people.
