Weight loss in Parkinson's patients

The phenomenon of weight loss in Parkinson's patients is a well-known phenomenon in Parkinson's disease. The reasons for weight loss are diverse and include dyskinesias (which cause an increased metabolic rate), swallowing disorders, loss of appetite, rejection of food that causes OFF, and more. At the same time, there are many diseases that are not related to Parkinson's disease that cause weight loss, such as a thyroid disorder or, God forbid, a malignant disease. It is customary to find out the problem by ruling out diseases other than Parkinson's disease that cause weight loss, especially malignant diseases:

  1. If there are involuntary movements, try to reduce their frequency and intensity.
  2. If there are swallowing disorders, a speech therapist and/or a gastroenterologist should be consulted.
  3. If there is a decrease in appetite, you can consult a dietitian and enrich the food with high-calorie food.
